The announcement was made at the annual Disney shareholders meeting by CEO Bob Iger, who confirmed that the sequel to Pixar's hugely successful 2017 film will hit theaters in 2029. The original film's director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina are returning to lead the creative team for this highly anticipated project.

The journey takes him to the colorful and emotionally rich Land of the Dead. The film received tremendous praise from critics, earning an impressive 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes and winning two Academy Awards—Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song ("Remember Me"). It also performed well at the box office, grossing $814.3 million globally against a budget of around $200 million.
During the meeting, Iger expressed his excitement for Coco 2, though he noted that the film is still in its early stages. "We know this film will be a great mix of humor, emotion, and adventure," he said. "We're excited to share more details soon."
